Issue

Rose had his experience in 1947 but did not know it for what it was digested or "assimilated" with the passage of time.

Examples:

1.) Read Cosmic Consciousness, gift from Mrs. D'Aliberti

2.) Correspondence with Pulyan.

A couple brief observations:

According to Bob Martin's book, Rose didn't meet Paul Wood until the summer of 1963, about 2 years after he met Pulyan. So by this time R would have been fully "assimilated" so to speak.

Lately, working on the Pulyan letters, it seems 101% impossible that R would have faked his attainment to Pulyan -- for a number of reasons. Reading the R side of the correspondence, he didn't appear to know at all what P was getting at, and was pretty nasty or at least abrupt about it. Pulyan had been showering him with tons of wisdom and R was basically calling him a phony. I don't think R would have put this kind of energy into any ruse, there would be nothing to gain from it certainly -- as Pulyan was offering everything he had.

There's another myth (Jake's biographical notes) that Pulyan was a rough teacher. On top of this R said he was vulgar and he didn't care for his personality. In these letters Pulyan was not vulgar at all, but very refined and cultured. However, his criticism of R was withering.

The fact that R says he "stole" transmission from Pulyan and sneaked away possibly could have a different interpretation: that R was too embarrassed to admit to Pulyan how wrong he had been about him.

On page 98 of Martin's book (p 104 of the pdf) Rose says (this is 1966, when they were trying to form another group) "Two of my sources on Zen experiences were women". I wonder if one of these was the woman who was Pulyan's teacher.

Take care.
